![]() Initially, I worked with the company as a medical scribe, and later on I transitioned into the lower and middle ranks of the company’s management team. In completing my final experiential learning requirement for the University Honors Program, at the University of Cincinnati, I spent one year working with Elite Medical Scribes, LLC. With each new role I served in the company, I earned a new badge, representing new people and new challenges with each new step. I chose these badges because they represent my upward trajectory within the company during the time that I was working there. For a detailed reflection of my experience, see my reflective essay below.Īs an artifact of my learning during this experience, I have chosen to attach a photograph of my clearance badges for three of the hospitals that I oversaw in my final role with Elite Medical Scribes, as a Regional Manager. Ultimately, I was able to solidify my career goals, with the intent to attend medical school and study workplace psychology concomitantly. What was I able to accomplish in my time as a Medical Scribe?ĭuring my time as a Medical Scribe, I was able to gain exposure to the medical profession in a way that no classroom experience can provide. In terms of managing patient flow, the scribe is trained to sort incoming patients into beds in the hospital, handle incoming and outgoing calls to the attending physician, assemble and deliver discharge instructions to the nursing staff, and manage the patient tracking board (keeping the physician up-to-date with all patient information as soon as it becomes available). From this point, the scribe documents the key points of interest that need to be in the patient’s chart, from the patient’s history and Physician Review of Systems, to the Physical Examination, Radiological and Laboratory Studies, Procedures, and any specific discharge information. With regard to producing healthcare documentation, the scribe shadows a physician or mid-level provider, observing their patient encounters. Medical Scribes garner training in managing two areas of practice in the hospital: producing healthcare documentation and enhancing patient flow. To this end, as I hope to one day pursue a Medical Doctorate myself, I took a position as a Medical Scribe in October of 2013.Īs the industry is still very new, much is evolving with regard to the job responsibilities of a Medical Scribe. ![]() With this in mind, holding a position as a Medical Scribe is a very sought after opportunity for many students aspiring to go on to Medical School. The Medical Scribe Industry is one that is quickly growing in the United States, especially in light of increasing demands for more detailed healthcare documentation to be created by healthcare providers.
